Common reasons for denture repairs

Important!

If you have broken or damaged your denture in any way, please don’t attempt to fix it yourself.
Home repairs can often damage your denture further, resulting in unnecessary expense – or even requiring a new denture.

HYGIENE TIP: Before bringing your denture in to us, please remove it, brush with soap and water (to remove any debris) and place it in a clean plastic bag.

How to take care of your dentures

Sometimes, repairs are unavoidable. Perhaps you’ve dropped your denture on the bathroom floor. Or maybe your gums and jawbone have changed shape, causing uneven pressure on your denture which has weakened your denture, causing it to snap.

Here’s how to extend the life of your denture and avoid costly repairs:

Handle with care

When handling your dentures, make sure you stand over a folded towel or a sink full of water to avoid breakage if they slip out of your hands.

Brush your dentures daily

Brush your denture using a soft toothbrush to keep them free of plaque and any food deposits.

Keep dentures moist when not wearing them

If dentures dry out, they may lose their shape. Speak to your dental professional about the best liquid solution to keep your dentures moist.

Never force your dentures

Always move your dentures gently – and never, ever try to repair your dentures at home.

Follow good oral hygiene

Brush and floss any remaining teeth, and gently brush your gums and tongue with a soft-bristle toothbrush.

Uncomfortable dentures

Often, patients call us wanting a ‘repair’ because the dentures are uncomfortable. Rather than needing a repair, the denture needs a reline.

Why did my dentures break?

Dentures don’t last forever. Depending on the materials, they can last anywhere between 2 to 10 years, with most dentures lasting approximately 4 to 6 years.

Suppose you have an inferior quality denture, and it doesn’t fit well. In that case, there may be an uneven spread of pressure every time you bite, which compromises the denture. Over time, the denture succumbs to the stress and then breaks.

Another common reason for breakages is through being accidentally dropped on hard tiles in the bathroom floor.
